Andrea "Nani" Barretto is honored to be serving as HWMO's new Co-Executive Director, as of September 2019. Although she is new to the world of wildfire, she brings a leadership "flavor" that is built on collaboration, inspiration, servant leadership, catalytic communication, and clarity of purpose to achieve the organizational mission. Nani began her public service with the Peace Corps in Zambia (2001-04) and continued in higher education as a social scientist at the University of Michigan (2006-11). She earned a Masters of Health Science degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society in 2006 and a Bachelors degree in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology from Emory University in 2000. Since her arrival on the Big Island in 2011, she has served as a grants consultant for area schools and non-profits. She has 3 young children, 5 backyard chickens, a new puppy, and a forever husband.
Elizabeth Pickett is Co-Executive Director of Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, where she began working in 2008. Elizabeth works with staff and partners across the state and Pacific region to implement wildfire mitigation, planning, and education projects. Through her time at HWMO, she has witnessed how important collaboration and inclusive processes are on all projects, and believes such a coordinated and respectful approach is the pathway to wildfire readiness and resilience in Hawaii. She is Vice President of the Big Island Wildfire Coordinating Group and helped co-found the Pacific Fire Exchange project to develop and connect fire and land management science and practice. She earned a Masters of Environmental Science degree from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a Bachelors Degree from University of California, Berkeley.
When not working, Elizabeth can be found kitesurfing, painting, sharing time with her family, and playing with her son Laith!
Jessica Santa Cruz is excited to be a part of the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization as the Wildfire Mitigation Program Manager. She was born on Maui and raised on the Island of Hawaiʻi. She worked as a seasonal wildland firefighter for five different National Parks over 13 years. She initially started on a type 2 hand crew at Hawaii Volcano National Park and moved on to working on fire engines and helicopter crews on the mainland. Jessica received her B.A from Mesa State College in Mass Communication and Public Relations with a concentration in Print Media. She interned with the Student Conservation Association, Fire Education Corps for Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks as a Fire information officer. While being a seasonal wildland firefighter in Yosemite National Park she earned her Masters at Gonzaga University in Communication and Leadership. Most recently she has been working as a public information officer for Fire Information on large disasters in the mainland.
Jessica recently returned to the Island of Hawaiʻi with her husband, a firefighter at Pohakuloa Training Area, and their yellow lab, Cletus, a First Responder Therapy Dog.
Deven Aruda is HWMO’s Wildfire Collaboration Program Coordinator tasked to build and maintain relationships between working groups, networks, and stakeholders across the Hawaiʻi-Pacific region. She acts as a connector to foster meaningful and long-lasting partnerships.
Deven is a Maui local and stayed in Hawaiʻi for most of her life. She earned a bachelor's in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Prior to joining HWMO, she worked with Native Hawaiian college students, volunteered with community organizations, and traveled to different countries. In her free time, she enjoys anything outdoors and reading.
Melissa Chimera is the Pacific Fire Exchange's project coordinator, a science and knowledge communication project co-sponsored by HWMO and University of Hawai`i. Melissa works closely with Clay Trauernicht, fire scientist at University of Hawai`i to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and the latest Pacific fire science research among diverse stakeholders.
Melissa is a Honolulu native, having earned a B.A. in Natural Resources Management from UH Manoa. She has worked for two decades as a natural resources and volunteer manager in Hawai`i for the National Guard, The Nature Conservancy and Haleakala National Park conserving endangered species and restoring diverse native ecosystems. She now lives on the Hamakua coast with her son Theo, biologist husband Chuck and two egg-laying hens. The other half of her professional time is spent in her at-home art studio painting and exhibiting her mixed media work featuring endangered Hawaiian species in museums and galleries in Hawai`i, the mainland and abroad.
Allyson “Ally” Earl, is HWMO’s Wildfire mapping technician who primarily supports efforts to map wildfires in Hawaii and the US Affiliated Pacific through the use of Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing methods. This position seeks to support and advance the current wildfire mapping strategy in order to facilitate collaboration and communication with our partners throughout the region.
Originally from Southern California, Ally has spent most of her adult life in the Pacific working as a field technician in Guam, Saipan, and finally Oahu, working with native species. She received an M.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2021, working extensively with remotely sensed data to understand wildfires in tropical regions. When not working she can be found outside paddling, hiking extremely ridiculous distances like from Mexico to Canada on the PCT, running, or just enjoying the sunshine.
Orlando Smith is HWMO's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist. Orlando was born in Berkeley, California and moved to the island of Hawai’i in 1989. He graduated from Honoka’a High School and the University of Hawai’i in Hilo, where he received a BA in Geography in 2002. After college, he began working as a Soil Conservation Technician at the Waimea Field Office for the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), a division of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In 2004, he founded O. Smith Co., a sole proprietorship, providing Geospatial Consultancy for a variety of Planning/Engineering and Environmental client applications.
Although Orlando is presently working for HWMO as the GIS Mapping and Communications Engineer, he continues to consult on various projects around the State of Hawai’i as a Cartographer/ GIS Analyst. He is currently the Vice President of the Honoka’a Business Association, for which he has been a director for the past 2 years. He is also an Executive Board member of the Big Island Sustainable Communities Association, a non-profit group dedicated to community based education and grassroots economic development.
In his spare time, Orlando enjoys music production and performance with current projects Moemoea, The Durgas and King Jah & The Universals. Orlando is also a Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) member, with a long list of commercials, television, movie and stage credits.
Orlando believes strongly in the Hawaii State Motto… UA MAU KE ‘EA ‘O KA ‘AINA I KA PONO… The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness!!!
At HWMO, Charice helps to keep the office running smoothly. She fulfills the gift shop orders as well as any community requests for educational materials. She looks forward to help spreading the word about wildfires and the impact it has on the environment.
Charice enjoys traveling, bullet journaling and playing Pokémon Go.
Dana Aina recently accepted a part-time position as a firewise community support specialist for HWMO. He’s been an active member of the Waikōloa Village Firewise Committee since 2019 and carried out the HWMO volunteer role of firewise community ambassador and wildfire home assessor since 2022.
Originally from Kailua-Kona, Dana graduated from Konawaena High School (class of ‘83, Go Wildcats!) and served 3 years in the U.S. Navy. He earned both his bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sports Science (Teaching Option) and master's degree in Counselor Education (Student Development) from The Pennsylvania State University.
Passionate about helping others achieve their goals, Dana spent over 30 years as a professional educator at the high school and post-secondary levels. During his career, he's been a teacher, volleyball coach, mentor, college counselor and scholarship program coordinator.
A kanaka maoli, born and raised on Moku O Keawe, Dana enjoys learning and likes to walaʻau about his ancestral home and culture with others. Retiring from the education field in 2022, Dana lives in Waikōloa Village with his lovely wife Shelly who keeps him busy with many home projects and volunteering.
Tom Loomis currently works as a project assistant for HWMO. He graduated from Humboldt State University with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and Recreation with an emphasis in Geography. Tom has worked for 9 years in community and environmental education.
When Tom is not at work at HWMO, you'll most likely find him surfing, paddling his recently built canoe, playing harmonica, or designing his next boat project.
