School Outreach Event

Parker School Presentation and Workshop

The HWMO team traveled down the road from our office to Parker School for a "Make A Difference Day" event. Our Board Treasurer, Carolyn Stewart, and Executive Director, Elizabeth Pickett, teamed up to give presentations to a class of high school students regarding watershed and fire issues, respectively. Afterwards, even given a long day of field work the students endured, the students were enthusiastic enough to join us for an outdoor activity. Pablo Beimler and Tom Loomis set up diaramas that demonstrated direct/indirect point source pollution. We had students simulate pollution events ranging from leaky septic tanks to agricultural runoff to post-fire erosion. The students not only learned a great deal in such a short period of time, they had quite a blast pouring cocoa powder and Kool-aid ("pollutants") into the model and watching the unfortunate aftermath. If only it were as easy to start our watersheds from scratch the way we did by simply pouring the "pollutants" out of the "sea" and giving the dioramas a nice rinse.

Waikoloa School Garden Day 2012

HWMO hosted a fire education day at our Waikoloa Dryland Wildfire Safety Park. Fourth graders from Waikoloa School walked to the garden for a day of educational games, scavenger hunts, and lectures. HWMO’s Tom Loomis coordinated the day’s lesson plans, which the kids had a blast with!

Summer Arts Camp: Wildfire Science and Safety Day

HWMO’s Andrew Tarnas spent the afternoon with the Waimea Summer Arts Camp, teaching basic fire science, fire ecology, and fire prevention. Campers learned in an exciting environment that included presentations, experiments, and field games throughout the afternoon. The camp was held at Waimea’s Country Day School this year.

Campus Day 2012

Our entire staff spent the day at Waikoloa Elementary educating K-8th graders about "Ready, Set, Go!" and "Firewise information" through a curriculum developed by our very own Tom Loomis.

As part of the activities, the kids had an opportunity to take a native plants tour. They were so bright that at the end of the day, they could identify all of the plants without breaking a sweat! We have some amazing future biologists on the way!

The kids absolutely loved the event and us the same - there's nothing we get a kick out of more than teaching kids about fire safety and ecology! In all, we were able to reach out to over 750 students!
